Shultzaberger

(drums)
Paul Shultzaberger is a versatile percussionist and educator with a keen interest in all musical styles. He continues to study methods that promote performance and teaching skills. His philosophy is one that maintains a strong working knowledge of diverse musical disciplines to be paramount in developing a musician. Paul supports an extensive teaching and artist development schedule in addition to his performing.

Paul began taking private drum lessons from the legendary Bill Chester at age 11. Through Bill Chester, he met and subsequently studied with Boots Williams, Dawson Bugg and Johnny Smith. While still in high school, Paul was hired by Johnny Smith to help run his drum shop and teach. He continued his studies throughout his teen years. At 19, he left the Washington D.C. area and moved to Austin, Texas with the rock band "Varanasi" and toured the southwest and Mexico. As an adult, Paul studied vocals, harmony and theory with Gary Schwartz and continued studying percussion with Bobby Christensen, Boots Williams, Carmine Appice and others.

Obvious influences would have to include Paul's many teachers and mentors. "There is no one defining influence on my playing," says Paul. "I have in the past and continue to be influenced by a multitude of musicians. Everything I hear influences my playing."

Paul is a veteran of various rock, jazz, and blues groups in the D.C. metro area. His accomplishments include 5 years with the Desert Cave Dogs. Paul co-wrote, sang backing vocals, played drums and percussion, and produced their album "Barking Up The Wrong Cactus." He also played drums and percussion with the Consummate Sidemen backing Nashville recording artist Bob E. Baker. For many years he worked as an "on call" drummer for many acts in the region. He continues to work with folk singer John Mornini playing percussion, congas, and timbales and participates in his cultural arts program teaching kids about folk music. Paul is currently developing world music and jazz cultural arts programs designed for children and teens. He also maintains a full schedule teaching private lessons in drum set, hand percussion, and concert drumming at his studio.
